SS Keystone State (T-ACS-1) was laid down on 23 January 1965 as the breakbulk ship, SS President Harrison, a Maritime Administration type (C4-S-1aq) hull, under Maritime Administration contract (MA 166) at National Steel and Shipbuilding Co., San Diego, CA. She was launched, 10 February 1965 and delivered to the American President Lines, 25 April 1966. She was converted to a Containership, 16 February 1973, Maritime Administration type (C6-S-1qc) and traded-in to Maritime Administration, 30 April 1979. She was operated by American President Lines until delivered to the Maritime Administration, 19 July 1982, for lay up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, Suisun Bay, Benecia, CA. She transferred to National Defense Reserve Fleet, James River, Lee Hall, VA., 11 September 1982 and renamed SS Keystone State in July 1984. Converted to a Crane Ship at De Foe Shipbuilding Co., Bay City, MI. in September 1987 and assigned by the Maritime Administration to the Military Sealift Command (MSC) Ready Reserve Force, (RRF). She was placed in service as SS Keystone State (ACS-1), 7 May 1984. The SS Keystone State (ACS-1) is one the 10 Crane Ships in the Military Sealift Commands Surge Force and is berthed at Alameda, CA. and is assigned to Maritime Prepositioning Ship Squadron Three and is maintained in a five-day readiness status (ROS 5)
